Bohdan Ostash
Professor at the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
My research interests revolve around bacterial genetics and genomics. Particularly, I explore specialized metabolic pathways of actinobacteria converting essential molecules (such as glucose, amino acids, acyl-CoA moieties etc) into natural products that possess antibiotic, anticancer, immunosuppressive and other types of bioactivities. The long-term goal of these investigations is to develop innovative approaches towards overproduction and sustainable discovery of such metabolites. Elucidation of possible reasons for and functional consequences of synonymous codon usage biases (using actinobacterial genomes as a model) is another major focus of my research projects. Some of the bioinformatics applications my research group has been working on recently can be found here: https://github.com/ostash-group. I teach a few courses at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv: molecular phylogenetics (for PhD and BSc students), introductory bioinformatics, genomics (for MSc students). For the last two years I also taught a course in functional genomics for MSc students of NTUU Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Politechnic Institute.
